Nigeria’s technology development agency, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has opened applications for the fifth cohort of its iHatch incubation programme, a nationwide initiative designed to strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem and support early-stage startups.
The new cohort invites innovation hubs across Nigeria to participate as state-level partners responsible for incubating and mentoring startups within their regions. The initiative aims to decentralize startup support and ensure that founders across the country—beyond major technology hubs like Lagos and Abuja—have access to incubation resources and mentorship.
Strengthening Innovation Hubs Across Nigeria
The iHatch Cohort 5 programme is focused on selecting innovation hubs that will act as implementation partners for the incubation initiative. Selected hubs will run structured startup incubation programmes in their respective states for at least a year.
Each participating hub is expected to recruit and mentor about five startups, guiding them through training, product development, and investor readiness processes.
According to programme details, eligible hubs must:
- Have operated for at least one year
- Demonstrate active engagement in their local startup ecosystem
- Possess the infrastructure required to host incubation activities
- Show experience in supporting startups or innovation programmes
Through this model, NITDA hopes to empower ecosystem leaders at the state level, ensuring that innovation support becomes more evenly distributed nationwide.
Building Scalable Nigerian Startups
The iHatch programme, launched in 2021, is a structured incubation initiative designed to help entrepreneurs refine business ideas and build scalable startups through coaching, lectures, and mentorship sessions.
Participants typically receive:
- Hands-on training and mentorship
- Support in developing viable business models
- Investor readiness training
- Networking opportunities with industry experts and partners
- Access to funding opportunities and demo-day pitching platforms
The programme focuses on key sectors of the digital economy, including:
- Financial Technology (FinTech)
- Agricultural Technology (AgriTech)
- Health Technology (HealthTech)
- Education Technology (EdTech)
- Logistics and GovTech solutions
These sectors align with Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda and the push for technology-driven economic diversification.
Expanding Startup Opportunities Nationwide
One of the central goals of Cohort 5 is to address structural gaps in Nigeria’s startup ecosystem, particularly the limited access to incubation resources outside major tech clusters.
NITDA is reportedly seeking about 37 innovation hubs—one in each state and the Federal Capital Territory—to serve as programme managers and help nurture startups within their local ecosystems.
By equipping hubs with structured curriculum frameworks, tools, and oversight, the programme aims to create consistent founder outcomes across different regions of the country.
Application Deadline and Participation
Applications for iHatch Cohort 5 opened in February 2026 and are scheduled to close March 16, 2026, according to programme announcements.
Innovation hubs interested in participating are required to submit documentation such as their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration certificate, social media presence, and evidence of previous ecosystem activities.
Driving Nigeria’s Digital Economy
The iHatch initiative forms part of NITDA’s broader mission to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills development across Nigeria.
As the ICT policy implementation agency of the Federal Government, NITDA continues to launch programmes aimed at supporting startups, improving digital capacity, and fostering technology-driven economic growth.
Through initiatives like iHatch, the agency hopes to create a pipeline of scalable Nigerian startups capable of addressing local challenges while competing globally.
With Nigeria emerging as one of Africa’s most dynamic startup ecosystems, programmes like iHatch play a crucial role in building innovation capacity beyond major tech cities. By empowering regional hubs and early-stage founders, the initiative could help unlock the next generation of technology-driven solutions across the country.
